The Most Scenic Campgrounds in the Southeast

Whether you’re enjoying a view of the sunset over the Appalachian Mountains or soaking up some beach time along the Gulf of Mexico, the Southeast is brimming with scenic campgrounds for you to visit.

The American Southeast is home to some of the most varied and beautiful landscapes you’ll find in the country, from wetlands to forests to shorelines. With its mild climate throughout the year, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to explore the best of what this region has to offer.

What sets these scenic campgrounds apart? These sites offer pristine views, secluded surroundings, and plenty of activities for families and solo travelers alike.

The next time you decide to head on a road trip through the Southeast, here are some of the top scenic campgrounds to add to your route:

1. Devils Fork State Park, South Carolina

Few places in the South can compare to the beautiful, crystal-clear lakes found at Devils Fork State Park. The campsites at this location — drive-up sites for car and RV camping or walk-in sites for tents — are all located right up against the water.

Spend the day lounging on the white, sandy beaches along the shore, swimming in the clear waters, sightseeing at waterfalls, or exploring hidden coves.

2. Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Georgia

There’s no better way to get up close and personal with wildlife than to explore the swamps of southern Georgia. At the campgrounds in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, you can safely spend a night on the water, savoring the sound of frogs, waterfowl, and other creatures that roam the swamp.

If you decide to venture out on one of the 14 flatwater canoe trails in the refuge, you might even spot a few alligators along the way.

3. Grayson Highlands State Park, Virginia

Sprawling green hills and rock formations aren’t the only things you’ll see at the Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia. Scattered throughout the hills are friendly but wild ponies.

Whether you’re taking a hike or enjoying your campsite in the highlands, you can watch these colorful creatures graze the rolling hills.

4. Tsali Campground, North Carolina

While most people in this region of North Carolina turn to the well-known Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this tiny recreational area is not one to be overlooked. With dense forests and beautiful lake overlooks, the Tsali Campground in North Carolina is a hidden treasure.

Set up your RV, camper, or tent alongside the stream bed and take a walk to Fontana Lake. If you enjoy mountain biking, you can set out to explore the 42 miles of rugged trails.

5. Desoto State Park, Alabama

Nestled atop the beautiful Lookout Mountain, Desoto State Park offers a gorgeous look at the scenic mountain ranges in Alabama. With rushing waterfalls, mountain views, and fields of wildflowers, the campgrounds here are just a short walk away from many fun activities. Kayak rentals, family-friendly bike trails, and seasonal nature programs mean that you’ll never run out of things to do.

6. Tickfaw State Park, Louisiana

Only an hour away from New Orleans, Tickfaw State Park is a lovely place for a Southern getaway. The campsites at this location are placed among stunning ancient trees covered with Spanish Moss, right along the swamp and the Tickfaw River.

Explore the wetlands or rent a canoe to travel down the Tickfaw River. For children, the water playground and the Nature Center offer a nice break during the hot summer months.

7.  Blue Spring State Park, Florida

Only an hour away from Orlando, you can find a 2,600-acre beach paradise. Right on the banks of the St. John’s River, the campgrounds at Blue Spring State Park offer a nature experience unlike any other.

Try swimming, snorkeling, or scuba diving in the crystal-clear Blue Spring or enjoy hiking trails that wind through the ancient Southern oaks.

The most exciting attraction of all comes around November, when you can spot manatees flocking to the warm waters of St. John’s River.

8. Cape Hatteras National Seashore, North Carolina

At the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, you can camp right along the shore and fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves. Whether you’re walking the sandy beaches, enjoying a beautiful sunset, or gazing up at a sky filled with stars, there’s always something new to see along the coast.

When you’re not taking a leisurely walk along the beach, you can enjoy an exciting surfing experience with some of the biggest waves on the eastern seaboard or visit a historic lighthouse nearby.

9. Backbone Rock Recreation Area, Tennessee

The Backbone Rock Recreation Area in Tennessee offers only a few sites, but you’re in for a treat if you manage to snag a reservation. Soak up the solitude of the Cherokee National Forest in your spot along the scenic Beaverdam Creek.

Just a short walk away from your site, you can spot stunning waterfalls or the iconic Backbone Rock, along with some hand-carved stone tunnels from the early 1900s.

10. St. Andrews State Park, Florida

With the Gulf of Mexico on one side and St. Andrews Bay on the other, the campgrounds in St. Andrews State Park wouldn’t look out of place in a vacation catalog. With pure white sand, emerald green waters, and a nature reserve overflowing with bird and butterfly species, these sites offer the best that the Florida coast has to offer.

Spend your day exploring these pristine beaches for fishing, swimming, snorkeling, or surfing. Alternatively, you can go on a sunset stroll through the dunes, taking in the diverse coastal plants and animals.
